The Power of Constant Prayer: Consistency is Key

When we think about faith, we might think of beautiful moments with God that touch every part of our beings, holy hours that bring tears to our eyes, moments of fellowship with friends, and so much more. Yet I think sometimes we don’t realize or forget that the only way to truly form a relationship with God that is deeper than the superficial is through consistency. For many years I thought I had a great relationship with God, when in reality I was suffering a spiritual battle and I didn’t realize it for a long time. I look back on moments in my college experience that I was living under a cloud of sin that was covering my eyes. I was active in my church group, I was a part of the leadership team, and I went to mass every Sunday, so I thought I was fine. Yet I was blind to the sin I was living in, and I was blind to the suffering my soul was going through because I was distant from God.

Why was I blind? Because I thought that going to mass every Sunday and helping at my church youth group was good enough. I thought that I was a great person, so blinded by my ego that I didn’t even realize that my life was falling apart. Isn’t it funny, how the devil tricks us into thinking that we are such great Catholics that we don’t need prayer, the Eucharist, Confession, or Mass, because we are already great human beings. Yet looking back on those days, my soul cries out to the girl I once was who was so blinded to the pain she was causing herself.

What does it mean to be consistent in our faith?

Consistency means to strive towards a deeper relationship with Christ everyday, and to recognize that as sinners, we will never stop needing him. When I stopped praying, I began to choose sin over God more often. I stopped praying, and I couldn’t even see that I was doing things I had sworn I would never do. I stopped praying, and my life began to lose its meaning and I slowly began to fall into the world. To put it simply, I stopped caring.

Here is where consistency comes in. Consistency in our daily lives is so important, but consistency in prayer is the ultimate recommendation I could give to anyone (*hem hem* especially myself). Prayer is crucial to not only discover who God is, but to fall in love with him and grow in our faith. Without prayer, it is as if we are fighting a battle with our eyes closed, just swinging hoping to win the victory. It will never happen without prayer.

How can we be consistent in prayer?

By praying every SINGLE day and spending quality time with God every day! When times get hard, you pray. When times are good, you pray. When prayer gets boring, you keep praying. When you fall over and over, you keep praying. The point is, no matter what happens, it is crucial that we stay consistent with our daily chats with God, because if not we will begin to fall into the world.

We can’t say we don’t have time, because many times we spend hours scrolling endlessly on social media. Instead of comparing ourselves to others, we can spend time in prayer and reflect on who we are and who God made us to be. Spend time and delve into his magical Word, the Bible, where he reveals himself to us and helps us understand him. Drive to the chapel and sit down to talk with Jesus in the Holy Eucharist, even if it is just for 10 minutes. Gather your family for 15 minutes and pray the Holy Rosary, meditating on Jesus’ life and his unconditional love for you. No matter how you do it, choose Jesus before everything else and spend time with him. Make him the priority and make him the center of your life daily.

The Power of Consistency

Life will always be full of noise, distractions, and things trying to catch our attention. The time will never be perfect nor will we ever spend time with God if we don’t plan it out or make it a priority. Schedule a time out of your day for prayer and don’t just say you’ll pray- DO IT.

Through prayer, we discover who we truly are. God reveals our nature, his love for us, and his ultimate plan and purpose for our lives. Through prayer, we recognize that we are sinners who desperately need God. We recognize that nothing is given to us that God has not placed in our hands, and that everything we have is because of him. We can understand that Jesus is the ultimate source of life, and that everything comes from him. Through prayer, God prepares us for the difficult moments of life. He gives us courage and strength to do things we didn’t ever think we could do, and he shows us that we are braver than we could’ve ever imagined.

Prayer is the most powerful weapon any of us have, and consistency helps us reach our ultimate potential. You don’t have to have the most beautiful prayers, you don’t have to be an expert, you simply have to do it. Jesus will manifest his glory in your life and reveal himself to you in ways he has never before through prayer. So, what are you waiting for? Your Beloved God is waiting for you with open arms.

Love, Luna
